The Soling One Meter, or S1M, was sanctioned in 1993 as an American Model Yacht Association (AMYA) class. The boat design is based on the full-size Olympic Soling. As with its full-size original, it is a "one-design" class, and allows few variations, making it an ideal boat for the beginner R/C modeler or sailor. But don't let that fool you - these boats are fun, fast and maneuverable enough to delight experienced R/C sailors as well. The S1M is sailed in clubs all across North America and has a growing worldwide following. Over 10,000 S1Ms have been sold and 746 were registered to active AMYA members at the beginning of 2005. This small-sized yacht must be purchased from the exclusive supplier, Victor Model Products, and is offered as a kit, partially assembled or as a ready-to-sail boat. The philosophy of the Soling One Meter Class is to provide a low-cost one-design model suitable for introducing newcomers to the hobby, as well as provide enough performance to keep long-time model sailors interested. These goals are met admirably by the Victor product, and the class has grown to become the largest in the AMYA.
